Why is Balmorhea State Park closed? ›

The pool closed in 2018 when structural damage was discovered. It briefly reopened, but the park closed again completely in 2019 for repairs, including campground upgrades, septic system work and issues with the pool's drainage.

Camping Facilities

Facilities include: RV Sites: Full hookups with water, electricity, and sewage. Tent Sites: Options with water and electric hookups, as well as primitive sites without utilities. Group Camping: The park offers facilities for group camping, but it is essential to book in advance.

About the Balmorhea State Park pool

More than 15 million gallons of water flow through the pool each day, gushing from the San Solomon Springs. The 1.3- acre pool is up to 25 feet deep, holds 3.5 million gallons of water and the water temperature stays at 72 to 76 degrees year-round.

Park closes at 7:30 p.m. or sunset, whichever comes first. Public consumption or display of any alcoholic beverage is prohibited.

No cooking, pets, or glass containers in pool area. No grills or tents allowed in the pool area. Pop-up covers are allowed. Scuba instructors must show proof of insurance before diving.

Balmorhea Lake / Max depth

The swimming pool is one of the largest man-made pools in the United States, fed by 22 to 26 million gallons of clear, 76' water from San Solomon Springs. The pool has a large main circular area 25-feet deep with two long rectangular arms extending out. One arm is three to five-feet deep, the other is 20-feet deep.

The San Solomon Springs System is a network of six springs, located in the Chihuahuan Desert in the Trans-Pecos area of West Texas. The largest of these springs, San Solomon Springs, feeds the iconic pool at Balmorhea State Park.

Balmorhea is known for its crystal-clear waters that are home to the Balmorhea State Park and Balmorhea Lake. The lake provides an ideal habitat for many species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. It's also one of the few places in Texas where you can experience natural hot springs.

DAY USE FEE: $7 per person, age 13 and older. Day use fee not required for guests of the San Solomon Courts.
