nu. Witness the following A stranger said to a sailor, on the Dock, the other day, 44 Can yoa tell me the name of yonder Schooner "no," replied Jacx. I presume you do know," rejoined the stranger, and It was upon that presumption that I Tentnred to ask yon. Bat it strikes me yon might return a more definite and civil answer. Come what is her name Shiver my timbers," growled Jsfla, hare n't iljust told yon ao, no, no." Well," responded the stranger, If yon do not choose to tell, I cannot, of course, force ymrtodo ao; but if I ever hare the opportunity of giving you any Information, believe me yoa shall be rewarded for your politeness." This waa too much for Jack, who could neither comprehend the reason for, nor the drift of such language; so seising tbe catechetical individual by the arm, he led him to the schooner, and pointing to the namo-Lno which stuck oat in bold relief, upon the stern, thundered oat, There, read for The stranger did read, am Jacx, somehow or other, got half seas oyer" before leavjng port.

The first class fare on the two morning trains ta 60 on the others 60 to New York, and 10 to Philadelphia. We are informed that the through travel on this Bead is more than one-third greater than last year. The possession and constant employment of a telegraph line by this Company proves a perfect safeguard against collisions. The cars are wide, roomy and comfortable, the conductors are gentlemen, the engineers are bred to the business, and the trains are run on time." Besides, the Road passes through a lovely country, presenting to the traveller a constant succession of splendid scenery. Taken In connection with the Buffalo and New York City Koad, thia Boad forms the shortest route to the Metropolis, and is the mast desirable, in all respects, for those who lira in and near Buffalo.
We expect to see big figures, when its annual footing are made. jy The Piano Saloon of Saoi Bons wag the scene of a pleasant, musical gathering, last evening, when the company Were favored with performances by Big. Kosio, on tbe violin, sir. Carl Woltbohh, on the piano, and Herr Paataa, on the violoncello. These artistes are from Philadelphia, and propose giving a concert in thia city, during the coming week.
Bomo displays great dexterity in the use of the bow his execution is calculated to astonish rather than delight. He was a pupil of the celebrated PiQunm. WoLraoaw handles the keys as If he was familiar with them, and plays excellent well while Pang-B extorts from the violoncello all the melodywhlch It is capable of yielding. Their concerted pieces were very fine, as were most of the solos. We can assure our musical friends that their Concert will be richly worth attending.
The exact night has not yet been named. tar The New York Ledger says of Hawks, our enterprising news dealer, that he has an eye (evi- dently a Hawk eye) to Dullness." we would ask uie Ledger what he does with the other one? Buffalo Esqrem. You live nearer him than we do, and ought to know. When a man, in thu city, has one eye to business, the other Is generally in the same direction. How is It In Buffalo tNeu York Ledger.
That depends upon circumstances. A man may be you know. We never looked to see what Hawks did with the other eye," but we wiU lay the Ledger mail a small wager say a railroad pass or a shin' gle nail that both his optics are not upon his business. It Is shrewd surmised, out this 'ere way, that he keeps one eye on the Ledger, and the other upon Fankt Paxil. tt Ihfkoyid Oab Buhner.
Messrs. Jkn-g A Howell, agents for the sale of a new invention, called the Economical Gas Burner," are stopping at the Wadsworth Bouse, and propose to make our citizens acquainted with the merits of this new light" article. The burner consists of a combination of Jets, the light escaping in opposite directions and forming Itself Into a dense, yellow flame. This burner consumes all the carbon, as will be seen from the absence of the bine tinge that usually lingers around tbe jets of other burners, diffuses a stronger and clearer light, and effects a saving of 25 to 80 per cent In the consumption of gas. The Invention Is worthy of the attention of those who wish to avoid extravagant gas "bnis.
