What to Know

Critics Consensus

An achingly sad anti-war film, Grave of the Fireflies is one of Studio Ghibli's most profoundly beautiful, haunting works.

Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 30, 2018 Full Review Grave of the Fireflies | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Carson Timar ClapperCast The film has so much to say not just about war and death but also about pride. This is an incredibly worthy film that is a unique piece of Studio Ghibli's filmography. afonso z One of the best movies I’ve ever watched. The slow burn was done so well. Despite knowing the outcome, I could not stop crying even after the movie ended. Truly a masterpiece. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Nana G What I mostly feel throughout this movie is rage, thinking of the children who had it worst during the Japanese Occupation and also it reminded me of what happened to my great grandmother. The unborn foetus in her tummy was forcibly taken out and man-handled by the Japanese soldiers while she and her son (only 8 yo) watched before they were killed later. This aside. This story tells me how privileged these 2 kids were. They've never really known hardships and survival in their lives which explained why they were such proud and ignorant kids. Had the brother been abit more sensible; helping out with chores at the aunt's place or helping the farmer with weeding, harvesting or ploughing, instead of playing by the beach and other what nots, they wouldn't have to retreat to the caves. The other problem was he kept thinking he had a high ranking official father to rely on. The aunt was right in scolding him. She wasn't nasty, she was knocking some sense into him, which he didn't get it unfortunately. I hope this film reminds everyone to be humble. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Sarah B This film has awoken something inside me that I will not no matter how hard I try, to get out of me. This film is not for the faint of heart, an amazing inventive and beautifully written film that deserves a lot more recognition than it gets, it shows the true face of WWII but through an innocent onlookers perspective it go's into great detail on how fear can effect someone's life and how brutal our country (America) is. 100/10 amazing film but be warned, you will never want to watch it again. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Anett It was an absolutely heartbreaking beautiful movie. Falling in love with the characters and the bond they shared. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Lukas K Not for the light-hearted as this tragedy will leave you sobbing for days. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Halie S One of the best films I've ever seen. I'm a big Studio Ghibli fan and have been avoiding this movie because I've heard how sad it is. Finally decided to sit down and watch it and I have absolutely no regrets. Devestatingly sad, but an absolutely wonderful film nontheless Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
