History of Buchanan's Whisky | Buchanan's Whisky - Buchanan's Whisky (2024)
A Self-Made Man
Buchanan’s is named after the late James Buchanan, a driven whisky entrepreneur who crafted a Scotch that redefined greatness. Instead of creating a Scotch to be revered, he created a uniquely smooth blend that could be shared and enjoyed by all. In fact, the original Buchanan’s bottle design was inspired by the selfless act of sharing water canteens between British soldiers during times of conflict.
Buchanan launched his whisky company in 1884 and quickly shared it with the world, traveling from Scotland to London to Latin America. Today, the bottle’s Red Lion crest proudly wears its origin, “Buchanan’s Scotland,” but continues to spread its smoothness around the globe from Bogota to Los Angeles to Mexico City. After all, greatness is meant to be shared by all.

James Buchanan, a pioneer in the scotch business (later to become Sir James Buchanan, first baron of Woolavington), started producing Buchanan Blend in 1884. This blend used scotches aged at least 12 years. There were several name changes and several product developments over time.
How did Buchanan's — an immigrant Scotch whisky brand beloved by older Hispanic-Americans for over a century — become relevant to the new generation? A younger audience who feels pressured to choose between two identities: either embrace their Hispanic traditions, OR fully assimilate as Americans.
It's popular for a reason. This is a terrific old-school blended scotch, the kind of whisky your grandfather drank. Back in Gramps' day, Buchanan's was a high-end top-shelf brand. Today, it's migrated downward, joining other blends like Dewar's or Cutty Sark.

History: This is the name of a Scottish clan associated with lands on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond and in the Lennox. — The name Buchanan was brought independently to North America from Scotland by several different bearers in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Today, under the same company, Buchanan's has become one of the world's leading Scotch whiskies, spearheaded by unquenchable demand from Latin America and the US.
Tall, stately, stiffly formal in the high stock he wore around his jowls, James Buchanan was the only President who never married. Presiding over a rapidly dividing Nation, Buchanan grasped inadequately the political realities of the time.
Buchanan's 18YO Special Reserve sits at the top of Buchanan's core line up. It is a blend of grain and Single Malts that are married and then aged exclusively in ex-Sherry casks for a full eighteen years.
This is a mid grade shelf whiskey that tastes like pineapple. If you like pineapple, you'll definitely enjoy it. The packaging made it hard to pour because it has a pour tip not open spout. The taste is smoothe and not harsh.
Combine Buchanan's 12-Year-Old DeLuxe Whisky and fresh pineapple juice into a co*cktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain contents into a Highball glass or hollowed-out pineapple over fresh ice. Garnish with a fresh orange slice and fresh pineapple slice.
While whiskey doesn't necessarily expire, it does start to lose flavor and elements after it is opened. An unopened bottle of whiskey will last indefinitely if stored in proper condition. After opening a bottle of whiskey, you have as long as two years or as few as six months or less to drink it before it goes bad.
Buchanan's Pineapple is a great addition to any home bar. It's unique smoky sweet flavor is reminiscent of teriyaki. I tried it straight up, mixed with co*ke, and mixed with sprite. I didn't truly appreciate this whiskey until I made pina coladas by mixing lime, coconut cream, pineapple juice and ice in a blender.
The Buchanan name has been grounded in the lands surrounding the shores of Loch Lomond since 1225, when a grant by the Earls of Lennox to Sir Absalon of Buchanan, referred to in contemporaneous sources as 'clericus meus' i.e. he was a clergyman.
